Coalport China

  • Just to let you know a bit about me and what I do. My partner and I run a china, crystal and flatware replacements company on ebay. We are currently offering over 3000 items. But forget all that for now, what I have decided to do is pick a pattern from our large collection and highlight it here! Today I chose Coalport Ming Rose, so I just went in to our warehouse picked the first set that I laid my eyes on took a picture of a "few" of the pieces and started researching. What I plan on doing is finding out all I can on the "chosen" pattern of the week and put it all together here for you. If you are interested in any Ming Rose pieces just copy and paste the link below

Coalport has produced this pattern with several variations over the years. Ming Rose was introduced by Coalport in 1970 and ended production in 1993. They produced a scalloped and a smooth version.

    History of Coalport the Company

Founded at Coalport, Shropshire in 1796 by John Rose The factory moved to Staffordshire in 1926 "Coalbrookdale Porcelain" was used sometimes as a trade description and a mark because the factory was located at Coalbrookdale Its bone china was very popular and high-quality and elaborate pieces continue to be made The brand is now part of the Wedgewood group

Early pre-1805 porcelains were unmarked and marks were rarely used before 1820

While we are on the subject of Coalport lets not forget to mention the Nantucket pattern, it was only made 1 year and that was 1987. I am not sure what determines how long a pattern is made, I will say the longer they are made is due to their popularity and that they sell more, BUT this pattern to me, is almost, (I said almost, nothings perfect) perfect, it's classic basket weave on the rim, all white in color goes well with any decor, but that's just me. My point being since they only made Nantucket 1 year I guess it wasn't all that popular.

Then there was Geneva X 8!! Coalport made the Geneva pattern 8 different ways but under the same name...talk about confusing! Some with subtle differences, other were more obvious. I never understood why makers either in crystal or china, would make the same named pattern with very little difference in design.

If you find yourself interested in any of these great patterns, or maybe something else, copy and paste my link into your browser and voila'   http://stores.shop.ebay.com/looknomore4crystalchinaflatware
