1865, Sunset on the Thames Etching & Dry Point by
#472hp - This is a wonderful antique etching and dry point entitled "Sunset on the Thames", dated 1865 with signature engraved on the plate (lower right corner). The artist of this lovely early piece, Sir Francis Seymore Haden, lived from 1816 - 1910 and was a British surgeon and etcher. He had a famous brother in law (James Whistler- the artist of the famous painting, 'Whistler's Mother'). The name of the etching appears on the bottom left margin in pencil and the artist's signature is on the bottom right margin in pencil. The Roman numeral VI appears on the bottom left margin of the plate. This is an early piece and not a recent copy. This etching measures 5 3/4" x 8 3/4" and the back mat measures 9 1/2" x 11 3/4". It is mounted on the left edge only to the paper backing that created a mat for the picture and it appears to be the original mount. (see last photo). A lovely 19th century etching in exceptional condition. |

4-Color Engraving Livorno, Italy, Dated 1790
Extremely rare 4-color engraving from an intaglio plate executed in 1790 by Italian artist, Vincenzo (Vincenzio) Scotti. Engraved by Carlo Lasinio, who was one of the most important engravers in the development of 18th century printing. This is not hand colored--it is one of the first multiple plate color engravings known. The engraving depicts ships of other city states & countries that the mercantile fleet of the city of Livorno might meet in the Mediterranean. The only other example of this engraving that I've been able to find is in the Meritime Museum in Greenwich, England. Plate size: 20-7/8" x 27-3/8". Framed size: 28-1/4" x 34-1/2". Framed by Savageau Gallery in Denver, Colorado. No sun damage, no foxing, no tears. |
