General Joe Wheeler Cigar Tin Trunk
This is a General Joe Wheeler Cigar Tin Trunk by Elmer E. Kirkland of New York. Fightin' Joe, as the General was known, was born in 1836 and died in 1906. According to an internet search, he has the rare distinction of serving as General in wartime for 2 opposing forces. He was a noted Cavalry General in the 1860's during the American Civil War and served later as a General in both the Spanish-American and Philippine-American War. He also served as a United States Representative from the state of Alabama. This is a nice cigar tin trunk with a paper label insert on the inside with General Joe Wheeler's tribute. Under his picture it reads: General Joe Wheeler in Blue. The lower right corner reads: American Lithographic Co., NY. The lower left corner reads: Trademark Re????Rec by E.E. Kirkland & Co. The ? is because of damage over this area and the rest of the word is not readable. In the upper left area in a circle label which appears to be placed over the General's label it reads: Not made by a Trust. The label is not mint, there are what looks like maybe some minor pencil scratches and a few areas of wear, but in general, a very nice piece of old advertising. The tin trunk itself also has wear, which I believe shows in the photos for the most part. It is not mint, but not bad condition considering its age. On one end is the lettering for Elmer E. Kirkland & Co., Binghamton, NY. On the other end are several labels made to look like a trunk that has traveled. This piece measures approximately 6.5 x 5 x 3 inches. The hinge is present which fits over a small piece upon which a small lock could be used to protect the cigars! |
