Sevres Porcelain

In last Tuesday evening's show, in which I picked out some bargains at the Mall, I selected a porcelain box that had a Sevres mark in addition to the mark, "A.C.F.". It was priced at $50. In the end I didn't pick that box for purchase, as I said that I thought the Sevres mark might be a fake. I based that opinion on the relatively poor quality of the brass, even though the hand painted porcelain was of a high quality. I have now determined that the box was made, probably within the last 20-30 years, by an Italian company named, Artistiche Ceramiche Fiorentine. They routinely use a mark almost identical to the well-known Sevres mark because they admit that they are trying to duplicate many of the Sevres pieces. Even though it's not Sevres, and it's not old, the porcelain box is very nice and certainly worth the $50. For the record the vendor is not selling the piece as Sevres. Here is an example of a reproduction that is done in a high quality--it's hand painted, and done very well. If it were Sevres, it would be worth many times the $50. Gary
